You’re reading Souls Like Wheels — a newsletter for creatives, makers, and doers. This week I’m unpacking the world of weaving with a focus on a few different types of weaving that everyday makers can approach.
These types of weaving are a bit unconventional and out-of-the box — enjoy!
Off-loom weaving
Perfect for sewers and knitters or crafters without any weaving experience / weaving tools (such as a loom).
Off-loom weaving is the most simple version of weaving I’ve encountered as it is a form of weaving without a loom!
Off-loom weaving utilizes hand-weaving and simple tools, such as boards (or even rocks and sticks), thread or yarn, and a tapestry / sewing needle to create intricate weaving patterns.
Notable Makers: Sarah Ward of Lark and Bower is most notable off-loom weaving artist I’ve come across. Her work is so impressive!
How to Learn off-loom Weaving
Lark and Bower offers weaving classes via Zoom and I can personally vouch for how great her teaching is! The following photos are my weaving creations after attending her Zoom weaving class for beginners:

Visible Mending: Darning Loom Weaving to Mend Clothes
Perfect for knitters, sewists, and those looking for a creative way to embellish their clothing
This niche craft requires using a darning loom (such as the Speedweve mending loom) intended for repairing holes in clothing like sweaters and knit socks.
Visible mending is all about turning a fabric repair into a stand-out piece of its own. Crafters are using brightly colored yarn and make visible repairs and add a touch of flair to their articles of clothing:
How to Learn
Darning loom is a form of visible mending that seems to be taking off on social media. You can learn the techniques via YouTube and find patterns on Etsy.

Macraweaving: Macrame + Weaving
Perfect for: macrame makers looking for new techniques to incorporate into their work.
Macraweaving is simply the combination of macramé and weaving. Anywhere you have verticle strands in your macramé work, you can use as weft strands and incorporate weaving techniques.
