The interesting thing about mushroom dyeing is that the mature and wormy mushrooms supposedly make better colors. Right now in Colorado the Boletes are very buggy and I haven't found many edible ones.
So none of them have gone to waste so far, but I am growing impatient looking for edible mushrooms that aren't full of worms! 🤢
The problem in my neck of the woods is that there's a variety of mushrooms that looks VEEERY similar to boletus. Except they're super bitter and can ruin the whole pot. That's why I usually hunt for chanterelles.
Identifying boletus has definitely been a challenge for me! Morels were challenging to spot but very easy to identify. I'm very much relying on friends to check my haul because there are so many lookalikes.
My late grandma would definitely scold you for using precious boletus for anything other than food, but those colours are truly fab!
That's totally fair!!
